WHAT WE DO

CASL Leadership Development Program

Program Overview: CASL Leadership Development Program

The CASL Leadership Development Program is dedicated to nurturing a new era of STEM leaders who will expand the participation in STEM fields across various racial, ethnic, and gender categories, specifically at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

It’s a year-long endeavor that combines academic and skill-building activities with the purpose of enhancing the leadership acumen of CASL Fellows, ultimately aiming to diversify participation of underrepresented students in STEM areas.

Key Components and Methodology

Integral Program Components:
  • One-on-one professional coaching.
  • Execution of a yearlong institutional change project.
  • Attending three face-to-face residencies.
  • Practical exercises involving self-examination, liberatory leadership, and soulful leadership.
  • Analyzing and critiquing real-world case studies related to both contemporary and historical HBCU events.
  • Participation in a nationwide online community centered on expanding participation in STEM.
  • Assistance in developing a national voice through various forms of writing and storytelling.
Methodology:
  • The program utilizes three psychological domains of leadership development – cognitive, affective, and behavioral – to dissect theories of leadership and organizational change, alongside exploring the historical and contemporary leadership legacies associated with HBCU STEM achievements.

Program Structure and Content

Cognitive Domain

Focuses on extending beyond traditional academic leadership motifs to encompass topics genuinely rooted in recognizing and appreciating the lived experiences of African Americans.

Comprehensive academic and skill-building experiences are curated to optimally position emerging HBCU leaders for influencing STEM higher education reform.

Affective Domain

Allotted time during each of the three program residencies for reflection on experiences pivotal to personal histories, professional strengths, and potential leadership blind spots in the context of expanding STEM participation.

CASL Fellows engage in self-assessment, encompassing 22 leadership behaviors known to underpin vital leadership functions such as honing emotional intelligence skills, active self-care, developing followership, and navigating politically contentious climates.

Behavioral Domain

CASL Fellows implement a six-month action learning project (ALP) with the assistance of a campus mentor trained in the foundational design principles of evidence-based coaching.

The ALP enables fellows to amalgamate expertise in cognitive and affective leadership development domains while participating in HBCU-specific institutional transformation efforts aimed at broadening the participation of African Americans in STEM.
